  1. I think the main idea of this cartoon is that Hitler is death. You can see how the skeleton is disguised behind a mask of Hitler. The skeleton is leaning over the large line of soldiers marching perfectly in sync. He is standing above them, almost as if he's looking down on them, making sure they do exactly as he says. The line of soldiers extends all the way back. I think the long line represents the longg journey it took for Hitler to gain power and become the leader. I look at this like past and present. The people come from the past..when the lies werent so big and just starting out(just like the soldiers in the far back of the picture moving closer to present day.) Then as the soldiers come closer..the lies get bigger and bigger and closer to death(Hitler in the picture).
The skeleton holds a bloody Swastika firmly in his hand. But if you look at the Swastika on his arm band..its facing the opposite direction. Before Hitler became Germany's leader, the Swastika was a symbol of peace. But as he grew more and more powerful and began brainwashing more and more people, the meaning of the Swastika changed and now means the opposite of peace. Evil. I think the changing of the Swastika relates to the change Hitler went through. He had transformed from an innocent man into a manipulative cruel leader. At first, Hitler had just wanted the best for Germany and intended to do whatever it took to get them back on track. But as he realized how many people depended on him and trusted him, he became power-hungry and took advantage of it. He went from good to bad just like the Swastika went from a sign of peace to evil.

  2. The cartoon shows a skeleton with a Hitler mask on. The skeleton is being followed by tons of smaller skeleton soldiers. The skelton's belt says Hitler on it and he has a swastika on his arm. He is also holding a backwards swastika. Online, I found that the swastika was originally facing the left and was used as a good luck charm. There is a myth that says the nazis purposely flipped it so that the swastika would symbolize evil rather than good.
After reading that, I wasn't sure what to make of it. Maybe Hitler just wanted to carry around a good luck charm. I think that the long line of people behind him is representing his followers. The Hitler skeleton is larger than the rest, and he is looking down on the followers. This is probably because of the power he had over them. I think that the artist is trying to make Hitler and his followers look bad. It was probably drawn by someone who disliked Hitler to show that his way of leading Germany wasn't working. I think that it was intended for anyone and everyone, just to turn people against Hitler.

  3. I think thats this picture shows that a lot of people fell for Hitler's charms. I think the the mask is there to make himself look better even though hes ugly on the inside. He was really just the "Angel Of Death" killing the minds of his followers and the persecuted. They were blind to what was happening because of Hitler's charming mask.

  4. i think what the artist is trying to say is that there is a madness inside of us and if you do not have madness you are perfect and there is no one on the earth that is perfect and the soldiers in the picture are just little innocent kids telling what they have to believe in .

  5. In the picture, Hitler is really a skeleton with a mask on. He is leading a vast army of skeletons, which may represent how endless the Holocaust may have seemed at the time or how inhumane the Nazis were. The marching soldiers pictured may also represent how Hitler wasn't the only one that made the Holocaust happen. The Hitler skeleton is holding a scythe in the shape of a swastika, except it is going the other way (counterclockwise). I think this represents how the killing of Jews is counter-productive.
I believe this cartoon was created to educate people about who Hitler really was and what he was really doing.

    1. I agree and disargree with what you said. I agree that killing the Jews was counter productive. Then again, Hitler probably didn't think that, so why would he hold a scythe representing that killing Jews was bad. I guess it kinda depends on who drew the picture and their feelings on Hitler.

      Delete
    2. oops, I should have worded this differently..
Hitler is holding the swastika because that is a powerful symbol for the Nazi party. Since the artist that drew this was probably against Hitler, he/she drew the swastika backwards, perhaps for the reason I mentioned earlier.

As I looked at the picture again, I realised that if the scythe was turned to the right, Hitler's head would be cut off and he would be killed. Kind of ironic... Maybe the swastika is reversed to symbolize how the tables have turned. This cartoon may be urging people to bring down Hitler.

  6. In this picture the artist portrays Hitler as a Death Machine. This creation shows Hitlers power in a few ways. One way he introduces this is by showing his endless army of followers, another is his enormity compared to the army's hight and his scythes of death which other people pointed out are the opposite way of the swastika. I absolutely with others' reasons for that. In my opinion what I really think the artist is trying to show is how every one in the picture, (his followers) is a skeleton. I think this has a greater message than just telling that they are death doers. I believe it shows that because they are skeletons they follow him blindly. Relating to what Colton said the mask does not have eyes. I think it shows that he was in a way blind as well. They also have no brains which serves to prove that they followed orders blindly and did not think about what they were doing or supporting. Finally, they have no hearts and I believe the artist is trying to say that some Nazis were ruthless people with no mercy. -Tristan

  8. The main part of the picture is Hitler as a ruler (in skeleton form). I think his feelings are represented by the mask in which how on the inside he really dosent have a soul and is thinking from another mind about too much power...... And about controlling when people are least vounerable. Then, the mask shows what all his followers see him to be, a great speaker, leader, and dictator of which they only later found out that he was really a prosecuter and the only dictator he was was a dictator of death whih is why all his followers are also skeletons..Blind from the realization of what is really happening. If you look at the nazi symbol on his arm, it is going the "correct" way but the Scythe is going the oppisite direction in what i think symbolizes. His dictatorship not only didn't go the way that the public wanted it to but went a way Hitler wasn't aware of either til all was said and done. -Reily

  10. I think Hitler is portrayed the face of death in this picture. Following him are blind skeletons which are in an army of many. Hitler is spinning an axe or something but its the swastika backwards, almost like hitler is turning or world backwards, or reversing evolution. I think this shows how Hitler's action are not great events that should be repeated in the future, but terrible actions resulting in extinction of many people in the human race.

Hitler is caring a scythe that is a opposite swastika representing death instead of life. Also the backround appears bland and empty. 12. In the political cartoon of Hitler, it shows that hitler is a skeleton representing death. He is also wearing a mask, which i think means he is hiding his true identity and he is a lier. The skeletons marching beneath him are Hitler's toy soldiers who he just plays with in order to get power. also, three of the swastika blades are bloody and one is clean, i think this represents that most of hitler is gory and cruel while he keeps one side, that is nice and charming, to perform in front of the public (another relation to the mask). hitler has many followers showing how powerful he is and what damage he can do. i also noticed that the sky closer to hitler is bright showing that he thinks his decisions are wise, but the sky farther away from him his dark and gray showing that the persecuted are living in a dismal world.

  13. In this picture, a skeleton dressed up as Hitler is leading a skeleton army with a scythe that looks like a backwards swastika. The skeleton represents Hitler as a disguise to the people. The mask of his face hides the skeleton which symbolizes death. The skeleton army represents the Nazis and how they were the "messengers" of death that followed Hitler's orders. The scythe is in the shape of a backwards swastika. I think this represents the "other side" of Hitler, the cruel, violent, side that the common people didn't see. I think this picture was created by the persecuted to show the common people what Hitler was actually doing to them.

  14. In this picture, it shows Death betrayed as Hitler, by showing him as a skeleton. He is holding a scythe, which looks like a backward swastika. He is leading an army of skeletons, who are blind to Hitler's lies and are just doing as ordered and not knowing what harm they are causing. I believe that he is trying to pretend that he is not doing bad as people think he is, by wearing the mask, hiding death. The backwards swastika is a symbol or change. Hitler was once an innocent child but later turned evil, as the swastika was originally meant for peace and now it is a sign for death. I think this cartoon was intended for people that followed Hitler so that they could see what he is causing. Also in the picture it shows a never ending army of supporters, which might be showing that he has a whole other generation(Hitler Youth) behind the army he is running now.

  15. In this cartoon, the artist draws a skeleton wearing a swastika and a mask of Hitler. It is surrounded by an army of Nazi skeletons. "Hitler" is also carrying a scythe in the shape of a backward swastika.
I think the artist is trying to say that Hitler is death in disguise. Another thing i noticed that i don't think anyone else has mentioned (this is ground for extra credit Ms. Werner...) is that all the Nazi skeletons look alike. They have been so brainwashed that they are not even people anymore. They are almost machines. My interpretation of the backwards scythe swastika thing is that since there is blood on it, it shows that Hitler has killed people with it. Hitler was a great leader in the beginning but after he started persecuting people, the tables turned, and he was viewed as a monster. So uh... yeah.

  16. In this picture, Hitler is portrayed as a skeleton holding a perpendicular scythe, shaped as a swastika. He seems to be leading an army of SS officers/Nazi followers to an unknown destination. Hitler is actually a skeleton, wearing mask of Hitler. This could represent how behind a strong, charismatic leader's face, is not what people think. For Hitler is actually a scrawny skeleton, leading fellow blind skeleton to a false victory. As you can see, the four-way scythe is dripping with supposedly blood. And lastly, Hitler's belt is labeled with his name. (Here's a point that someone may or may not have gotten to, but since belts are used to support something, and Hitler is written on it, I think it means that only his name is what people follow him by. For instance, if some random speaker of no known political history asks you to follow him/her, you probably wouldn't take his word. But if his name was "Hitler," you would follow him in an instant because people of Germany at that time thought of Hitler as a god.Just had to throw that out there.)

  20. After examining the picture, I concluded that this was a political cartoon or propaganda against Hitler. I think that the masked skeletal figure (a supposed representation of Hitler)shows that Hitler; behind the kind face was a cold, heartless, psycopathic lunatic. I noticed the soldiers were skeletons as well, they symbolize the same thing, empty shells of men, fear of disobeying, brainwashed and manipulative people. I also believe that the long line of soldiers that follows him symbolizes what great lengths the soldiers or officers below Hitler would go to in order to live untill the next day. My last opinion is the scythe. It is in the odd shape of the swastika but in reverse. I think it means that if the scythe were facing the other way it would not be able to attack in the direction they are heading. This might mean that the Nazis were willing to bend some rules and break some traditions in order to carry out their plan and fulfill their goal.

  22. I think this picture portrays Hitler as the large skeletal figure and the smaller figures are the people who followed him in his pursuit to kill millions of people. The smaller figures seem to be mindlessly talking orders from Hitler. But i found the most interesting part of the picture was how Hitler's weapon is opposite of the normal shape of a swastika. The swastika normally stood for peace and love which was exactly the opposite of what Hitler did. I think the artist was trying to show this by having Hitler hold the weapon that way.

  23. I believe that hitler (as death) when spinning the scythe backwards represents the way hitlers power started shrinking after persecuting the Jews. 25. Response:

When I analyze the contents of this picture, a number of images really grasp my attention. You've all clearly pointed out the main figure looming above the picture as a portrayal of Adolf Hitler as Death- the evidence being the skeletal structure of the Fuhrer and the scythes he caries with him as he looms above everything else in the image. This could represent a variety of things, whether it be the lack of remorse and overall enthusiasm to slaughter people in the hopes of gaining more control that Hitler was known for, or his command over seemingly endless troops who follow him blindly in pursuit of an end goal fabricated by Nazi propaganda and ignorance.

There is also the marching line of skeletons, clad in army caps to symbolize, theoretically, their membership in the Nazi party. Their willingness to carry out the wishes of Death, The Fuhrer, so they can fulfill their duties as soldiers may also be depicted here.

Now, a pet peeve of mine that's been really irking me here as I read through the responses is the misconception that the swastika made out of scythes is backwards, therefor having some meaning behind it. I can't really find I connection between any hidden themes and the left facing swastika, (a "Sauwastika"), I HAVE found a lovely Wikipedia article on the subject.---> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauwastika

  26. I think that the picture portrays Hitler as Death. His soldier army continues to come and come from the back of the photo which shows that his army grows and grows all the time. The scythes shaped as the backwards swastika shows how he started out as a good person who loved church and believed in the Bible but the blood shows how he eventually turned to evil. The swastika changed from a symbol in the church to the symbol of death and pain.

  34. In this picture, Death, portraying himself as Hitler, Is marching his army of soul-less men to the battlefield. His soldiers are aimlessly following orders without questioning his authority and his baffling ideas, similar to the typical military saying "Don't ask, don't tell"
I also believe Death is portraying Hitler to bring out hell on Earth. In my opinion, I believe Death simply masks himself as a simple being, trying to spread death to all (i.e Osama Bin Laden, Joseph Kony) Also Death is wearing a belt that says "Hitler" on it, a named that will be tattooed in the hearts of many, bring fear as he walks. Also the scythe is in the shape of famous Nazi symbol, the "Swastika" but the scythe is only bloodied on three parts, indicating that Hitler has one good side, a side he brings out when giving his famous speeches for why he is contemplating mass genocide of a single race. I believe that the artist is trying to portray that Hitler is in fact, Death and his soldiers are demons, working not at their own will but simply being brainwashed through the propaganda spread all over Nazi Germany. This "cartoon" was aimed at saying that Death has a sharp tongue and is using Hitler as a way to brainwash the many people in Germany to follow his instructions with out a simple question "Why?" The crowd, in particle, that this poster was aimed at, was the people who questioned Hitler's beliefs and were not yet brainwashed by his curt and seducing speeches.

  35. I think Hitler in the picture was the puppet master of the Nazis controlling the Germans and brainwashing them to think that the jews are the people to blame.

  36. I believe that this picture demonstaights how Hitler was brainwahing the Germans and they soon realized it but they couldn't speak out about because they would be put in a concentration camp with the Jews.

  37. The big skeleton is Hitler and he's wearing a mask so that people wont see that he is the grim reaper. The other skeletons are Hitlers followers. Blindly fllowing and agreeing with him.

  38. i think the skeleton is hitler when he is dead and he is wearing a mask of himself so all the other dead people know who he is. the skeleton army is all the people that died because of hitler and are still under control even though they are dead. the swastika on his arm mean peace and that represents hitler before he turn bad. he is probably wearing it so he doesn't forget that he wasn't all bad. and swastika in his hand probably mean evil/bad and that is what hitler has become so thats why it is bigger.

  39. I think the skeleton is hitler and he is actually the grim reaper and is hiding behind a mask. I think he is representing death. He also has an army of skeletons that are following him representing how his soldiers mindlessly followed him

  40. This picture holds so many hidden ideals it's hard to know where to start the mask is clearly death in disguise but I'd like to believe it serves a double meaning as how hitlers people only saw one side of him while he was clearly playing the opposite represented as death. The vast line of troops is the countless lives that served under him just as blindly as the rest of Germany's population. The scythe in the for of a backwards swatsticka obviously means the opposite of its original purpose peace -Charlie lewis
